Until It Turns Grey

Sand split into red and cyan is kicked by feet running in a loop, and grains stuck to a foot are dropped in later prints. Every 26–34 seconds the runner turns round and the loop moves and changes size. Running the other way does not separate the sand; the mixed areas appear grey.

Each grain measures 2 px on screen. The runner takes 9 steps a second with a stride of about 32 px. At each step, about 35% of the grains under the foot are exchanged with grains carried on it, and about 55% are kicked back and to the side. The print sinks and the kicked sand builds a rim; steep slopes slump. The page opens 7 seconds into the run. The dividing line and the loop change on each visit.

“…until the sand gets mixed and begins to turn grey…”
Robert Smithson, “A Tour of the Monuments of Passaic, New Jersey,” 1967
